Who uses the Fantasy & DnD Name Generator

Rolling a new character

A name helps a character come alive before you have finished the sheet. Generate a batch and say a few out loud: the one that sounds right can often suggest a personality or a backstory too.

Dungeon masters improvising

Players will always ask the name of the guard you made up a moment ago. Keep this page open during a session and you will have an answer at once. Save the good ones so you can recall them next time.

Fantasy writers

A consistent sound helps a culture feel real. Generating several names for the same race gives you a family of similar sounds, which you can edit into names for your own characters, houses and clans.

Video game players

Role-playing games often ask for a name on the first screen. Use the first-name-only setting to get something short that suits your character and fits within the game's character limit.

What each race's names sound like

  • Elves have flowing names with soft sounds and long vowels, and family names drawn from nature and the sky.
  • Dwarves have short, heavy names with hard consonants, and family names about stone, metal and craft.
  • Halflings have friendly, homely names, with family names that suggest good food and green hills.
  • Gnomes have playful, bouncy names, with family names full of gadgets and tinkering.
  • Half-orcs have blunt, guttural names, with family names that sound like battle honours.
  • Dragonborn have sharp, rolling names, with family names about fire, scale and storm.
  • Tieflings have dark, elegant names, with family names that hint at a shadowy past.

Three ways to make a name your own

Swap one letter so that the name is easier to say at the table. Give your character a short nickname their friends would really use. Or use the family name as a story hook: ask who first earned it, and what they did to deserve it.

Fantasy & DnD Name Generator questions

How are the names created?

Each race has its own set of syllables. The generator joins a random start, an optional middle and an ending, then adds a family name built from two words. That is why you get new inventions rather than names from a fixed list.

Can I use these names in my own book or game?

Yes, you can use them freely. Because names are assembled at random, one could occasionally match a name that already exists, so search for your favourite before you publish or sell anything that uses it.

Do these follow the official DnD rules?

No. They are original names inspired by the general feel of each fantasy race and are not taken from any rulebook. Use them with any tabletop game or setting you like.

What is the difference between the masculine and feminine options?

They use different name endings, such as softer ones for the feminine set. Fantasy naming has no fixed rules, so feel free to use whichever name you like for any character.

Why do some names look a bit odd?

Random syllables will sometimes produce an awkward result, and that is part of the fun. Generate another batch, or take a name you nearly like and change a letter or two. Your edited version may be the best of all.
